Kansas City Chiefs Season Preview

The Chiefs have one of the best defences in the league with a stacked secondary and line backing core that plays a bend-don't-break style. Alex Smith remains the quarterback for now but the Chiefs moved up in the draft to select Patrick Mahomes as the future starter. The Chiefs are one of the Patriots' biggest threats and with Andy Reid controlling them they could be Super Bowl bound.

Offence:

Alex Smith remains a decent option at quarterback for the Chiefs as he brings a consistent approach to the offence but the Chiefs want more so they drafted Patrick Mahomes to be the future starter. For the first time since 2007, Jamaal Charles will not be in the backfield for the Chiefs as Spencer Ware will be the starting running back. Charcandrick West, rookie Kareem Hunt and pass catching back CJ Spiller will all get playing time too as the running back. Anthony Sherman returns as one of the more reliable fullbacks to mainly protect Alex Smith. The Chiefs surprisingly cut Jeremy Maclin so he will know longer be the go-to wide receiver of the offence making rookie breakout star Tyreek Hill the number one target. Hill looked good on his limited amount of touches last year torching defences with his speed and quickness. Chris Conley will be the other starting wide receiver with De'Anthony Thomas and Albert Wilson serving as primary backups. Travis Kelce was one of the best tight ends last year as he dominated on the mismatches he created with his size and speed at the tight end position. The Chiefs brought in Gavin Escobar to be Kelce's backup but he will only see the field in two tight end sets assuming Kelce does not go down with an injury. Mitchell Schwartz is the best offensive lineman as he protects Smith's blindside with former first-overall pick Eric Fisher at the other tackle spot. Parker Ehinger, Laurent Duvernay-Tardif and Mitch Morse will protect Smith from the inside.

Defence:

The defence is the reason the Chiefs are Super Bowl contenders as they can dominate games with their pass rush or secondary. The defensive line is the weakest part of the defence and its best player is Chris Jones who performed well as a rookie. The other starters on the line will be Bennie Logan and Rakeem Nunez-Roches with Tanoh Kpassagnon and Jarvis Jenkins serving as backups. Justin Houston dominates the pass rush when healthy as he ranks among the best linebackers in the NFL. Tamba Hali and Derrick Johnson are both up there in age but Hali can still get to the quarterback while Johnson excels at tackling. Ramik Wilson is the other starter while Dee Ford comes off the bench to rush opposing quarterbacks. After only two seasons in the NFL, Marcus Peters may be the best cornerback in the NFL getting interceptions like the best. The next step for Peters will be to shadow the best from other teams instead of staying on one side of the field to see who comes to him. Phillip Gaines will be the other starting cornerback with Steven Nelson backing them up. Eric Berry returned after beating cancer and he came back as the best safety in the NFL as he plays the run and pass games very well. Ron Parker starts along Berry with Daniel Sorensen getting time as well.

Special Teams:

Cairo Santos struggled for a good portion of last season but he will return as the field goal kicker. Dustin Colquitt is one of the game's better punters and he will also be back on special teams for the Chiefs. Tyreek Hill was electric in the return game last year and has earned the right to return both punts and kickoffs.
